LABELS · 4 MIN READ

Read the label before you read the marketing.

What each panel on a supplement tub actually tells you, and where to find it.

The panels that matter

Turn the tub around. Supplement packs sold in Australia carry an information panel, an ingredient list, allergen statements and a batch and expiry marking, though the layout differs between products labelled as foods and products listed on the ARTG with an AUST L number. The panel is set out per serve and per 100 g, so read the column heading before you compare anything. Musashi Recover 100% Whey lists 25 g protein per serve across 60 serves in the 2 kg tub. Those numbers are printed on the pack.

Serving size changes everything

A serve is whatever the manufacturer defines it as, and it varies between products. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey states 24 g protein and 5.5 g BCAAs per serve, with 29 servings in the 907 g tub. Musashi Fuel Creatine states 5 g of creatine monohydrate per serve across 160 serves. Comparing two tubs only works when you compare like for like. For how much to use, follow the directions on the pack.

Batch codes, AUST L and testing marks

Near the base or lid you will find a batch code and a best-before date, stamped by the manufacturer. Some listed products carry an AUST L number; the Musashi Fuel Creatine label shows AUST L 201963. The Informed Sport mark printed on the Musashi packs, and the banned substance tested wording on the Optimum Nutrition label, are manufacturer statements, not ZyrexBio claims. Always read the label and follow the directions for use.
